IV. International Cyprological Congress

Publishing Guidelines

for publication by the Society of Cypriot Studies

Every participant of the IV. International Cyprological Congress with a paper is invited to send his paper for publication in the Proceedings of the Congress.

The size of the article submitted should not exceed a maximum of approx. 3,000 words, including footnotes. Three additional pages (tables) will be given for photographs (up to four photographs per page). In exceptional cases the decision is made by the Administrative Board, after suggestions by the Editorial Committee. Articles written in the Greek language are accompanied by a summary in one of the major European languages, while those in foreign languages are accompanied by one in Greek.

Articles must be submitted at the latest by 15 September 2008. The signed texts should be sent by post to: Society of Cypriot Studies, care of the Editorial Committee, P.O. Box 21436, CY-1508 Lefkosia, Cyprus, Tel. (00357) 22 432578; Fax (00357) 22 343439.

Preparation of the text:

The full texts with footnotes must not exceed 3,000 words approximately and are to be delivered exclusively on diskettes/CD, accompanied by a print-out.

Foreign words, abbreviations, Latin and Greek expressions (e.g. interpolated expressions, ones from Cypriot dialect) etc. are to be put in italics. The editor of the volume will send the writers the most recent printer’s proof. The writer will be responsible for the relevant cost in the case of corrections and later additions exceeding one page. The writer will receive ten (10) Offprints, and the volume(s) of the Proceedings’ section, where his article belongs. The expenses for further copies requested will be at the expense of the writer.

The choice of Greek in the form taken by the article is the prerogative of the writer, on condition s/he follows its accepted forms.

In the cases where there is reference to contemporary geographical names, only officially recognised versions are used (for Cyprus see: M. Christodoulou, K. Konstantinidis, A Complete Gazetteer of Cyprus (The Cyprus Permanent Committee for the Standardization of Geographical Names), Lefkosia 1987).

Articles will be published with the system of accents to which the author conforms. Re-publication in the Proceedings of a study already published elsewhere, is excluded. Consequently, those who send texts for publication are bound to abide by this principle. Intellectual property rights (copyright) of the published works belong to the Society. In the case of re-edition for other publications of articles appeared in the Proceedings, the written approval of the Administrative Board is required, with reference to its first publication being a sine qua non.

 a)                  Table of Abbreviations:

For the sake of uniformity, each writer is requested to follow the attached Table of Abbreviations of the Society of Cypriot Studies. In the case of other possible ones not included, the current international conventions are observed, the regulation of which is undertaken by the editor.

 b)                  Footnotes:

Notes are in the form of footnotes. The name and surname of the writer are written in small letters and are by declension (in the case of Greek names).

The title of independent study is given in small italicised letters.

The title of an article from a journal or of a jointly written work is written with small inverted commas in normal lettering.

The number of the volume, book etc. is written regularly with Greek, Arabic or Latin numbers, observing the system followed in the specific edition.

The place of origin of the edition is always written in the language of the study. That of journals is omitted, being considered unnecessary; while conversely the mention of the book or volume is considered essential, as well as its date. Sources and supplements that may be laid out in published studies will be written as in the original (multi-accented or with a single accent) and within inverted commas; sources are written in italics and supplements in normal lettering.

Before the year of the cited publication will be also stated the number of the edition (or re-edition) to which the writer is referring, as well as the names of possible translators and editors: for example, Ch. Delvoye, Byzantine Art (ed. Dem. Triantaphyllopoulos, trans. M. Papadaki), Athens ³1994, 56.

The complete title will be cited only the first time in the footnotes. Any later reference will include only the surname of the writer, the first noun of the title and in brackets the number of the footnote, where the bibliography is firstly cited.

  c)                  Further examples are given below of references to studies and to footnotes:

Peter van Deun, Sancti Barnabae Laudatio auctore Alexandro monacho et sanctorum Bartholomei et Barnabae vita e menologio imperiali deprompta [CCSC 26], Turnhout 1993.

 G. Sotiriou, “The Church of Apostle Barnabas near Salamis of Cyprus”, KS 1 (1937) 175-187.

Ev. Chrysos, “The Byzantine Face of Cyprus”, in: Κύπρος, το πολιτιστικό της πρόσωπο διά μέσου των αιώνων, Proceedings of Symposium (Lefkosia, 19-21 April 2001), (ed. Ioannes Theocharides) Lefkosia 2003, 142-150.

 D. Pallas, entry: “Mosaics” ΘΗΕ ΙΒ ΄, col.  1071-1240.

Footnotes:

Footnote 5: C.P. Kyrris, History of Cyprus with an introduction to the Geography of Cyprus, Nicosia 1985, 176-180.

Footnote 32: Kyrris, History (footnote 5), 314-318.

Footnore 33: Idem, History (footnote 5), 317.

Footnore 34: Ibid., 318.

d)                  Tables, photographs, sketches:

In the Proceedings accompanying black-and-white and/or coloured photographs, as well as diagrams will be published, under the condition that the intellectual property rights (copyright) have been requested and safeguarded by the writer in advance. The photos have to be in high resolution, digitalized, numbered and included for publication with full bibliographical information and reference to their origin. Furthermore, the captions of the photographs and diagrams are placed underneath with opposite numbering.

The number of pages for diagrams, black-and-white and coloured photographs does not exceed three, which allows approximately 12 items (photographs, diagrams) to be published.

Abstracts of Communications Volume

Before the beginning of the Congress, the Abstracts of Communications Volume will be published. Thus, we kindly ask the participants to send the abstract of your communication, written in the language in which it will be presented, by the 10th January 2008. In case that you wish to include in the Volume the summary that you have already sent with your participation form, we would like to ask you to state that clearly. If you have submitted a handwritten summary, you are requested to send it in an electronic form.

The participants should send their abstract only in electronic form (by e-mail attachment or on a CD) in at least two (2) pages, in which no footnotes or photos should be included (small linear designs could be included). On the top of the abstract the name of the writer and the title of the communication should be written in bold font style. The typing should be in MS Word, line spacing 1.5, in a page of thirty (30) lines, in Times New Roman fonts (for Greek), and Time fonts (for Latin characters). If you use a Macintosh computer, please do attach the fonts used. In the case that the abstract of your communication is not submitted on time, or if you do not state clearly that you wish the summary you have already sent to be published, then it will not be included in the Abstracts of the Communications Volume.

At the last page of the Abstracts of Communications Volume a list of the participants and their addresses will be included, therefore you are kindly requested to state your name and surname, your title/position, your address and e-mail address.

Cyprological Publications

During the Congress there will be a book exhibition with publications concerning or related to Cyprus. You are welcome to participate in the exhibition with either private publications, or with publications of the Foundation you are representing, as long as they are related to Cyprus. In such a case we would like to ask those wishing to participate to the exhibition, to inform us in time in order to proceed with the necessary arrangements.
