										enthralling world of the East. Through 
										maps, portolans, engravings, miniatures 
										of manuscripts, postcards and photos 
										from the 11th c. up today, various 
										aspects of 60 ports of Euxeinos Pontos, 
										Aegean and Cyprus are presented 
										highlighting the rich medieval past of 
										the respective countries.
										The exhibition 
										is entitled: “OLKAS II”, inspired by the 
										commercial ship of the Byzantines which 
										for centuries carried to the seas of the 
										East men and products, and through them, 
										artistic values and cultural products, 
										which influenced the character of the 
										medieval civilization both within and 
										outside the byzantine empire.
										“OLKAS II” 
										consists the extension of the project 
										“OLKAS” implemented by the European 
										Centre for Byzantine and Post-Byzantine 
										Monuments in
										collaboration 
										with seven institutions from Greece, 
										Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine and 
										Georgia in the frame of the project: 
										“OLKAS. From Aegean to the Black Sea. 
										Medieval city-ports in the maritime 
										routes of the East” funded by the EU 
										“Joint Operational Program “Black Sea 
										2007-2013”. With the collaboration of 
										the Society of Cypriot Studies OLKAS II 
										is extended to the Aegean and to the 
										Eastern Mediterranean, including more 21 
										ports in Aegean and six of Cyprus. A 
										bilingual Catalogue (Greek-English) 
										accompanies the exhibition. The 
										fascinating trip to Mediterranean waters 
										just begun….

						The documentary film: “Olkas. Discovering Medieval Ports 
						from the North Aegean to the Black Sea” has been 
						produced by the European Centre for Byzantine and 
						Post-byzantine Monuments and the Tect & Tact Production 
						Company in the context of the project: “Olkas. From the 
						North Aegean to the Black Sea. Medieval ports in the 
						maritime routes of the East”. The project has been 
						implemented in collaboration with 7 institutions 
						(universities, museums, research centres) from Greece, 
						Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Georgia and Turkey and aims 
						at the documentation and promotion of the rich medieval 
						heritage preserved in 45 city-ports of the North Aegean 
						and the Black Sea (www.olkas.net). 
						The film is a journey that starts from Thessalonike, 
						following the coasts of Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, 
						Crimea and Georgia and ends in Constantinople embedding 
						views of the most significant archaeological sites, 
						monuments and landmarks in 45 ports of the area.
						The screening is co-organized by the Society of Cypriot 
						Studies, the European Centre for Byzantine and 
						Post-Byzantine Monuments and the Cyprus Commission of 
						Byzantine Studies, under the auspices of the Embassy of 
						Greece in Cyprus and the Municipality of Lefkosia.
