 This bilingual (Greek and
German) Catalogue accompanied the namesake Exhibition, which was co-organized
by the German Embassy in Cyprus and hosted by the Society of Cypriot
Studies in Lefkosia, Cyprus. It presents the relations of Cyprus and
Germany through archaeological exhibits, dated to since the 12th
century. It was published by the Society of Cypriot Studies and the
Cypriot Committee of Byzantine Studies under the financial support
of the Association of the Scholarship Holders of the A.G. Leventis
Foundation in Cyprus. The sumptuous, illustrated
edition is structured in individual chapters, which follow the
Salutations (p. 19-47) and present the arrival and history of the
Germans in Cyprus (Ch. Chotzakoglou, p. 49-78), a brief diagram of
Cyprus presence in German literature (Ch. Chotzakoglou p. 79-88),
the historical evolution of metallic “alm-dishes” in Europe (Ch.
Chotzakoglou p. 89-130) with special subchapters devoted to the
materials and ways of casting, to the production centers, typology
and technique, impact on other materials, craftsmen, inscriptions,
iconography, iconographical sources, depiction of the dishes in art
and their various uses. The exhibits are presented
in the next section in five categories. An introductory text
proceeds in each chapter, followed by entries of the exhibits with
full illustration and relevant bibliography. The chapters are
dedicated to the German dishes in Cyprus (Ch. Chotzakoglou, p.
131-142), the German School paintings in Cyprus (Io. Eliades, p.
203-226), the German cartographers and travelers in Cyprus (Chr.
Hadjichristodoulou, p. 227-240), the German coins in Cyprus (Ch.
Chotzakoglou, p. 241-247) and the German supervisory and educational
tools from the Collection of the Pancyprian Gymnasium Museums (M.
Fantaros, p. 249-267). These texts are followed by a selected
bibliography (p. 268-273) and tables regarding the illustrated
material (p. 274-284). The Catalogue can be
ordered by the Society of Cypriot Studies in Lefkosia (tel. 22
432.578, cypriotstudies@gmail.com) and by selected bookstores.
